Furniture Designed for a Venue That Is Never Set Up the Same Way Twice

A wedding venue has a different relationship with furniture than a traditional restaurant. One night the room may be arranged for a formal wedding reception. The next event may call for cocktail tables, a Sweet 16 layout, corporate dining, a prom, or a more intimate family celebration. The space needs its own identity, but it must also leave room for every client's event to look different.

That is the challenge at Branches Catering, now presented as Branches Events, at 123 Monmouth Road in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Located near the Jersey Shore, the full-service event venue combines ballrooms, ceremony spaces, catering, bars, gardens, and private gathering areas within one property.

Superior Seating's furniture package uses a restrained combination of black-stained solid oak, black commercial bases, walnut and black wood frames, and fully upholstered Morgan seating. The dark palette gives the venue a polished foundation while remaining neutral enough for flowers, linens, lighting, centerpieces, and event-specific colors to transform the room.

From a Local Landmark to Branches

The history of the property reaches further back than the Branches name itself. In 2002, four local investors purchased the venue and introduced the Branches identity. The name was inspired by its location in West Long Branch, neighboring Long Branch, and the large magnolia tree that continues to mark the entrance.

The idea was not simply to create another banquet hall. The owners wanted to preserve the property's connection to the local community while building spaces appropriate for weddings and milestone events. When Branches launched, couples who had celebrated weddings at the property during the previous decades were invited back—turning the opening into a celebration of both the venue's past and its next chapter.

The property has continued to evolve. Following a brief pause in 2020, Branches underwent another transformation that introduced a custom inlaid dance floor, waterfall garden, redesigned ballrooms, warm architectural lighting, and custom bars. In 2023, The Squire returned as the full-service sister restaurant in the same building, reconnecting the property with another part of its history.

Inside Branches: Ballrooms, Gardens & Celebration Spaces

Branches is designed around transitions. Guests may arrive for a ceremony, move into cocktail hour, enter a ballroom for dinner, gather around the bar, dance, and then return to their tables throughout the night. The architecture and furniture therefore have to support movement just as much as they support seated dining.

The Main Ballroom is centered around a substantial hardwood dance floor with inlay detailing, elegant chandeliers, warm lighting, and a dedicated bar with granite surfaces. The East Ballroom offers another large celebration space with a private entrance, wraparound bar, and access to the dance floor, while the West Ballroom provides a more secluded environment for smaller gatherings.

Outside the ballroom setting, the property introduces another visual language through landscaped ceremony areas, a rose garden, fountain, patio, and waterfall garden. A bridal suite provides a private preparation space, while additional photo locations include the wine room and stone fireplace within The Squire.

Because each zone has its own character, the furniture inside the event rooms benefits from being visually controlled. The black and walnut palette provides structure without competing with the architecture or whatever colors a particular wedding or celebration introduces.

Catering Is Part of the Experience

The name Branches Catering reflects how central food has always been to the venue. This is not simply a ballroom that brings in outside restaurant service. The property operates as a full-service catered event destination where the meal is designed alongside the room.

Current menus range from plated lunches and dinners to buffets, brunches, and cocktail receptions. Events can also incorporate hors d'oeuvres, carving stations, raw bars, specialty desserts, and other enhancements. That variety means the furniture must accommodate very different styles of service—from formal multi-course dinners to social cocktail hours where guests move more freely throughout the space.

The tables become part of the presentation. Black oak surfaces provide a dark architectural foundation below glassware, florals, china, candles, linens, and catered dishes. Because the finish is restrained, the same table can look dramatic under red event lighting one evening and completely different beneath ivory linens and floral arrangements the next.

The Challenge: Furniture That Can Change with Every Event

Unlike a restaurant that can establish one floor plan and refine it over time, an event venue has to repeatedly reset its rooms. Guest counts change. Table arrangements change. Cocktail areas expand or contract. Bars may become more important for one event while formal dining dominates another.

That makes furniture selection a balance between identity and adaptability. The pieces need enough character to make the venue feel finished when a room is set, but not so much personality that they limit how planners can style the next celebration.

The Solution: Black Oak, Walnut & Upholstered Seating

Superior Seating approached the project with a simple material hierarchy. The tables provide the darkest visual anchor. Custom solid oak plank tops in a black stain were paired with black cross-style cast-iron and steel bases, allowing the support system to visually disappear beneath the top.

The seating then adds warmth and softness. A walnut Morgan bar stool combines an upholstered seat and back with a warmer wood frame, while the dining-height Morgan chair uses a walnut wood frame. Both were specified with New Soho Black Walnut vinyl, tying the two silhouettes together even though the frame colors differ.

The result is coordinated without being excessively matched. Black tables and bases create structure; black dining chairs reinforce the formal side of the room; and walnut bar stools introduce enough wood tone to keep social and cocktail spaces from feeling too monochromatic.

The dining-height Morgan combines a dark wood frame with an upholstered square back and seat, creating a more substantial chair profile appropriate for formal dinners and extended celebrations.

Why the Furniture Works for an Event Venue

One of the strengths of this installation is that the furniture does not dictate what an event has to look like. Black oak tables are dramatic when exposed, but they can also disappear beneath linens. Dark upholstered chairs feel formal enough for weddings while remaining neutral enough for corporate dinners or milestone celebrations.

The Morgan silhouette is especially useful in this context. Its fully upholstered square back has more presence than a basic dining chair, which helps it feel appropriate in a ballroom, but the clean geometry does not tie it to one decorative trend.

The walnut version at bar height also creates a subtle change in atmosphere. Cocktail areas can feel slightly warmer and more relaxed than the formal dining setup while still using the same upholstered shape and dark Black Walnut vinyl.

This ability to create small differences between zones is important in event design. Guests should feel a transition when they move from dinner to the bar or cocktail area, even when all of those spaces belong to the same venue.

Materials & Commercial Performance

The furniture package combines several materials according to the function of each piece rather than relying on one construction method across the entire venue.

• Solid Oak Table Tops: The TSO-PL tops are constructed from solid oak at approximately 1 3/4" thick and protected with multiple layers of conversion varnish.
• Custom Sizing: Standard and custom table dimensions allow the venue to create different seating arrangements while maintaining one material and finish.
• Cross Table Bases: Welded cast-iron construction, a steel post, black powder-coated finish, and adjustable glides provide a commercial foundation beneath the tables.
• Multiple Heights: Standard 28" and bar-height 41" base options help carry the same table language between dining and cocktail zones.
• Morgan Dining Chairs: Solid European beechwood frames use mortise-and-tenon joinery with fully upholstered seats and backs and nylon floor glides.
• Morgan Bar Stools: The matching bar-height design also uses European beechwood construction and provides a choice of footrest finishes, with black selected for this project.
• Custom Upholstery: New Soho Black Walnut gives the dining and bar seating one consistent upholstered finish despite their different frame colors.
