Designing a Modern Setting for a Cuisine Defined by Color & Spice
At 385 Harbor Blvd in Destin, Florida, Taste of India introduces guests to Indian cuisine through a menu that moves across different regions, cooking traditions, spices, and textures. The restaurant describes its approach as a culinary journey through India, bringing together dishes associated with cities and regions hundreds of miles apart.
The interior follows a similar idea. Rather than relying heavily on literal decorative motifs, the restaurant uses color, upholstery, wood, tufting, stone, and metallic details to create richness. Deep blue table tops provide one of the room's strongest visual elements, while walnut frames and muted upholstery create warmth around them.

A Culinary Journey Across India
Taste of India does not position its menu around only one region of the country. Instead, the restaurant highlights the geographic diversity of Indian cooking—from the dosas of Chennai in southern India to Delhi-style butter chicken, Hyderabad biryani, and Kashmiri rogan josh.
That variety is important because Indian cuisine itself is built around contrast. A meal can move between creamy and spicy, grilled and simmered, crisp and soft, cooling and aromatic. Taste of India says its kitchen uses high-quality ingredients, freshly prepared food, wholesome curries, and house-toasted spices and spice mixes to build those layers of flavor.
The menu also extends into tandoori cooking, vegetarian selections, rice dishes, breads, appetizers, and South Indian specialties. Dosas—thin savory crepes traditionally made from fermented rice and lentil batter—bring yet another texture and cooking tradition into the menu.
That diversity gives the interior design an interesting job. It needs to feel special enough for a full dinner experience without visually competing with dishes that already arrive at the table with strong colors, aromas, sauces, and presentation.
Inside Taste of India: Color, Texture & Contrast
The project's strongest design move is its use of several rich materials without allowing any one of them to dominate the entire room. Deep walnut wood establishes a warm foundation. Saffron-colored upholstery introduces a golden, spice-inspired accent. Muted Pashmina upholstery softens that color, while the Blue Galaxy quartz table tops provide a dramatic contrast.
The custom upholstery is especially important. Instead of specifying one material across the entire Madison chair, the project uses Slalom Saffron on the back and Repertoire Pashmina on the seat. This allows the chairs and stools to introduce stronger color at eye level while keeping the seating surface quieter and more neutral.
The result is layered rather than matched. Dark blue, walnut, saffron, taupe, black, brass, and chrome all appear within the furniture program, but they repeat in controlled ways that make the room feel intentional.
The Challenge: Giving a Modern Dining Room Its Own Identity
A contemporary Indian restaurant can take many visual directions. Lean too heavily into traditional motifs and the interior can begin to feel themed. Remove too much color and texture, however, and the space can lose the richness that makes the cuisine and dining experience distinctive.
Taste of India needed furniture that could occupy the space between those two extremes: modern in silhouette, expressive in color, and sophisticated enough to support both everyday dining and special occasions.

The Solution: Custom Upholstery, Walnut & Blue Quartz
Superior Seating developed the project around a coordinated collection rather than identical furniture. The Madison chair and matching bar stool establish the main freestanding seating language with their fully upholstered square backs, walnut frames, custom COM materials, and tailored nailhead detailing.
The custom B525 booth enlarges that upholstery story to an architectural scale. Instead of confining Slalom Saffron and Repertoire Pashmina to individual chairs, those same materials appear across a 192" × 60" L-shaped booth, creating a strong visual anchor within the dining room.
Blue Galaxy quartz then introduces a completely different material. Its reflective dark-blue surface contrasts with the soft upholstery and visible walnut grain, while black cast-iron bases visually recede underneath.
Custom L-Shaped Booth Seating
The Quilted Style Tufted Restaurant Booth is where the furniture program becomes part of the architecture. Specified in an L-shaped configuration measuring 192" along one side and 60" along the return, the booth creates a substantial upholstered destination rather than simply another row of seating.
Its 42-inch overall height provides enough back surface for the quilted pattern and Slalom Saffron upholstery to register across the room. Repertoire Pashmina on the seat creates contrast and directly repeats the two-material combination used on the Madison chairs and stools.
This repetition is important. Large custom booths can easily appear disconnected from freestanding restaurant seating, especially when their scale is dramatically different. Here, shared upholstery creates the connection. The silhouette changes, but the palette remains recognizable.
Why the Color Palette Works
Taste of India's furniture palette succeeds because the colors have very different visual weights. Dark blue appears primarily on horizontal table surfaces, where the Blue Galaxy quartz creates depth and catches surrounding light. Walnut brown forms the structural middle ground through the chair and stool frames.
Saffron is used more selectively on upholstered backs and the large booth, making it a recognizable accent without saturating every surface. The muted taupe of Repertoire Pashmina then gives the eye somewhere quieter to rest.
Black table bases disappear visually below the stronger quartz surfaces. Metallic nailhead and footrest details provide small highlights rather than introducing another major color block.
The overall effect parallels the restaurant's culinary approach: several distinct components coexist without needing to become identical. Just as spice, sauce, rice, bread, vegetables, and proteins create contrast on the menu, different furniture materials create layers within the room.

- Quilted Booth: The B525 is available in multiple custom shapes and dimensions, allowing the L-shaped seating to respond directly to the Taste of India floor plan.
- Blue Galaxy Quartz: The 1-1/4"-thick surface is manufactured from approximately 93% natural quartz and 7% resin and features a high-gloss, non-porous, scratch- and stain-resistant finish.
- Multiple Quartz Sizes: Four rectangular and square top dimensions create flexibility for different table arrangements without changing materials.
- Cast-Iron Bases: Black powder-coated welded bases provide commercial support beneath the quartz while adjustable floor glides help level tables and protect finished flooring.

The Dining Experience

Rather than using literal Indian motifs on every piece of furniture, the project expresses personality through color and materials.
